Before you start

Check care labels: We’ve all been guilty of ignoring the care label; however, it’s the most important step to making sure your clothes have longevity and the care they deserve. Common fabrics like cotton, synthetic and wool all have their own specific care requirements to prevent damage.

Care label instructions on clothing can feature symbols or words. The symbols can be broken down into washing, bleaching, drying, ironing and professional care. For a detailed breakdown of these symbols, you can refer to the ACCC website.

Step 1: make sure you have your laundry essentials

Having the right tools can make a world of difference. Other than the obvious washing machine, here are all the products you’ll need to get started:

Laundry detergent:

Skip to step 3 to see what laundry detergent is best for you.

Dryer balls:

Stain remover:

Lint roller:

Drying racks and clothespins:

Should you use fabric softener?

The purpose of fabric softener is simple: to soften your clothes. Fabric softener has been widely debated for years on its performance. Ultimately, fabric softener is a non-essential item that can even have negative effects on your clothes and your washing machine. It has been known to reduce the effectiveness of absorption overtime and can even cause white clothing to appear yellow. Additionally, build-up in washing machines can lead to maintenance issues.

Step 2: sort your laundry

You may have heard in the past to sort your laundry into colours and whites to prevent bleeding and dye transfer, but you should also sort your laundry by fabric. Always check the care label before washing your clothing. By doing this, you will be able to organise your clothing based on its washing methods, including water temperature, washing cycle and drying.

If you have a blended fabric (for example, 80% cotton and 20% polyester), it is best to follow the instructions for the most delicate material in the mix. For example, if your clothing contains wool or silk, its best to take extra care and follow the care instructions as per these delicate materials.

Social Media Content Producer Emily Murray says she swears by “investing in a good laundry basket system! I’ve got one for each of our rooms that I divide all our clothes into! And they’re collapsible so they save space.”

Getty Images

Step 3: choose the right detergent

The right laundry detergent makes a huge difference to how your clothes look and feel. Avoid harsh detergents on softer materials like wool and silk. Stronger detergents work best on linen and cotton. Polyester (a synthetic), tends to trap stains easier – which is why a heavy-duty detergent is a better choice. Enzyme-based formulas are particularly effective for breaking down oil-based stains on polyester and other synthetic fabrics.

Choosing what type of detergent also comes down to personal preference.

Liquid detergent: Suitable for all washing machines. Laundry detergent can dissolve easily in hot and cold water, which also means is doesn’t create as much residue or build-up on clothing or in the machine. Its formula also makes it effective in pre-treating stains.

Powder: The granular texture of a powder detergent is effective for tackling heavy stains, particularly natural stains like mud and grass. However, powder detergent can leave residue if used in cold water (or if you use too much). To prevent this, it is recommended to pre-dissolve the detergent in warm water before adding to the load.

Pods: Laundry pods are convenient and easy to use, taking the hassle out of measuring your liquid or powder detergent. Pods are best for standard, everyday loads. However, if not dissolved properly they can lead to residue on your clothes. To avoid this, make sure to place them directly in the drum and not in the detergent drawer. Make sure you store pods, and all other detergents away from children.

Tip: The less laundry detergent, the better. “I reduced the amount of laundry detergent I use after I found out a lot of people use too much. It’s made a huge difference to how my washed clothes feel – as well as saving me money because I get more washes out of a bottle” – Amy Bradney-George, SEO specialist.

Eco-friendly alternatives:

For the eco-conscious, there’s a variety of eco-friendly alternatives to traditional laundry detergent. This can include plant-based detergents, laundry strips, soapberries, baking soda and more. Below are some of our top picks:

Step 4: pre-treat stains

A general rule to remove stains is to act fast. to make sure you attack stains as quickly as possible, and check the care label as not all stain-removing techniques work for different materials.

“Bicarb soda is amazing for removing minor stains and marks from clothes, especially on clothes that you may not want to use a heavier-duty product on,” says our SEO specialist Amy Bradney-George.

Certain stains require special techniques to remove, while many can be handled with a spot treatment. If your stain is still fresh, blot any excess with a paper towel or cloth. For dried stains, you can remove any excess by gently scraping off the top layer.

Massage the stain with stain remover, or soak in a pre-treatment solution if the stain is older and won’t budge. Let your pre-treatment soak for a few minutes before washing. For specific stains, you can read this guide here.

Step 5: check pockets and remove items

A small but crucial step in your laundry process should be to check all pockets and remove any items such as coins, belts and other metal items that can cause damage to your washing machine. Taking a few seconds to check before loading your laundry can help prevent these issues.

Step 6: pick a temperature and cycle

There are various washing machine cycles to choose from, and no two washing machines are the same. It’s important to choose your wash cycle based on the construction, colour, and types of fabrics you are washing. The most commonly used cycles are:

Delicate Cycles: Delicate cycles involve low or no spin to avoid agitating the fabric. It’s best to keep the temperature of the water to cool, which can help prevent unwanted shrinkage on some items. For items that near some extra care, a mesh bag adds an extra layer of protection for your knits and delicates to avoid agitation but still thoroughly washing your pieces.

Normal Cycles: Everyday laundry items made of cotton, linen and some synthetics can handle the normal cycle, which is often a more intense wash due to the fast spin cycle.

Quick Wash: This is the fastest wash cycle – usually 30-minutes – and can be the most energy-saving options. Often, it includes a high-speed spin cycle to speed up the drying time, which is best for lightly-soiled clothing that needs more of a refresh. Due to the intense spin cycle, it’s best to avoid washing delicate fabrics on this cycle to prevent damage.

Choosing the right temperature: For best results, wash whites in warm or hot water, and cool or warm for coloured clothing.

Photography: Dave Wheeler | Styling: Lisa Burden

Step 7: dry your laundry

It is important to remove your load from the washing machine as soon as you can to reduce wrinkles and prevent mildew. There are many ways to dry your laundry. Some options include:

Maximise your spin cycle: Use a high spin setting on your washing machine to speed up the drying process. Make sure your fabrics are suitable for this method. The best hack is to keep your loads small.

Air drying outdoors: For best results, hang clothes in a well-ventilated area with plenty of airflow. Ensure garments are spaced apart to allow for even drying.

Air drying indoors: It’s best to hang your clothing near a window, a radiator, a fan or by a dehumidifier to avoid mould buildup and increase ventilation.

If you are in a cooler climate, heated clothes airers are a cost-effective alternative to drying your garments indoors.

Tip: Hang your wet garments on hangers for faster drying, and with less creases.

Machine dryers: If you opt for a dryer, popping a totally dry bath towel into the mix of wet clothes will absorb moisture from your load. Alternatively, add a tennis ball or dryer ball to the drum to ensure the fabric is aerated. An extra tip is to always empty the lint filter after each load, as a full filter increases drying time and reduces efficiency. Again, it is important to check your garments care tag to see if they are dryer-safe.

Our Senior Copy Editor Julia Fairley’s favourite laundry tip is to “hang up everything that needs to be ironed on hangers while it dries as this helps remove the wrinkles.”

Getty Images

Step 8: hang, fold and store

Storing your clothes once they are dry will help prevent wrinkles from forming. A stable, climate-controlled space with good ventilation will help your fabrics breathe.

However, if your clothes need a bit of extra smoothing, investing in a good iron or handheld steamer can make a difference. For those stubborn creases, Shopping Editor Jess G. Lynch swears by a handheld steamer: “Investing in a handheld steamer is my biggest laundry hack. No need to whip out the ironing board, a handheld steamer can get the creases and wrinkles out of your most delicate materials (e.g. silk) without the fear of burning the material.”

For those who constantly on the go, Jess adds: “A steamer is also great for when you’re running late in the mornings as you can set it up, steam your outfit and get out the door in under five minutes!”

And there you have it! This step-by-step guide on how to do laundry is everything you need to perfect your washing routine. Don’t have all the essentials? Check out our handy shopping guides below, or scroll back up to find some of our top rated laundry products.

Four factors that can help you find the best stick vacuum cleaner for your home

1. Battery life and charge times

As cordless stick vacuums are, well, cordless, you’ll need to consider the downtime needed to recharge. Depending on the area you want to use the vacuum for, consider how long you’ll need a charge to last – because there’s nothing worse than a vacuum that stops working midway through your cleaning routine.

2. Capacity

Whether you’re using your cordless stick vacuum for the whole house, a designated area (i.e. your home office), or spot cleaning during the week, it’s important to have a vacuum cleaner with a big enough dustbin to clean the whole space. The same goes for water tanks if you choose a cordless vacuum-mop combo. Generally, the bigger the dustbin, the more convenient. However, it’s also important to consider how much ‘extra’ weight you want to carry around due to a larger dustbin.

3. Floor-type suitability

If you have mixed flooring within your home, you’ll want to ensure your cordless stick vacuum has the capability to work efficiently on all surfaces or have different attachments to make this possible.

4. Vacuum accessories

Different rooms have their unique quirks. Maybe the master bedroom has a hard-to-reach corner, or maybe you’ve been dying to get rid of the dust lining the skirting board – having different attachments for every *unique* task will make cleaning easy breezy

How to clean oven racks so they sparkle like new https://www.homebeautiful.com.au/cleaning/the-secret-to-spotless-oven-racks/ Thu, 13 Mar 2025 22:49:18 +0000 https://www.homebeautiful.com.au/the-secret-to-spotless-oven-racks Without breaking a sweat.

The post How to clean oven racks so they sparkle like new appeared first on Home Beautiful.

]]>
Would you describe your oven as clean and pristine, or do you keep the door firmly shut and pretend that all of the baked on food and fat just doesn’t exist? There’s no shame in being in the latter camp (we’ve all been there) but there comes a time when you need to face grime and discolouration head on by cleaning the oven racks thoroughly so they sparkle just like new.

The secret to spotless oven racks, in all honestly, is to clean them regularly enough that grease and grime doesn’t build up in the first place. Smaller oven racks can simply be placed in the dishwasher (you may have to remove the dishwasher basket to accommodate larger racks) on a hot cycle, while larger racks can be wiped down with hot soapy water and a non-scratch scour after each use.

Missed the boat on regular oven rack upkeep? That’s ok. It’s still possible to make your oven racks look as shiny as they did the day you first installed the oven. Here we run through 4 methods to make your oven racks shine, ranging from all-natural cleaners to more potent formulations.

1. Bicarb soda and castile soap

Does the thought of soaking oven racks in harsh chemicals make you nervous? If you’d like to stick to non-toxic oven cleaners, reach for that $2 box of bi-carb soda to banish odours and dissolve grease, naturally. Simply dilute liquid castile soap (or an all natural dishwashing liquid like WashWild’s dishwashing liquid or Koala Eco’s lemon myrtle and mandarin essential oil dish soap) according to the product instructions in hot water, then add one cup of bi-carb soda to the mix. Place grimy oven racks in the solution and allow them to soak for an hour or overnight. Scrub with a non-scratch scour and rinse clean.

To clean away any stubborn spots, create a paste using equal parts bi-carb soda and water, and apply directly to spots. Buff away with a soft cloth or non-scratch scour sponge.

01

McKenzie’s bi-carb soda (1kg)

$3.95, Woolworths

A humble carton of bi-carb soda has so many uses around the home. It can dissolve baked on grease (like the kind you’ll find on oven racks), absorbing questionable odours while it works. When you’re not using it to clean the oven, you can use it to deoderise the fridge, unblock sink drains and scrub stains off stainless steel cookware.

02

Biome Concentrated liquid castile soap (unscented)

$24.95, Biome

This Australian-made castile soap may be gentle on skin and hands, but makes a powerful all-purpose cleaner around the house. It will get your oven racks gleaming but can also be used around the home as laundry detergent, dishwashing liquid and combined with your favourite essential oil and water to make a gentle, eco-friendly all-purpose cleaning spray. Made from olive oil and contains zero additives, preservatives or synthetic fragrances.

2. Put them out to pasture

It sounds like a prank, but apparently this method really does work. Clean oven racks without chemicals or breaking a sweat simply by placing them on the lawn overnight. Yes, really. The moisture released by the grass overnight will break down baked on grime so all you need to do in the morning is wipe it away with a soft cloth or sponge.

03

Scour Daddy non-scratch scrub sponge (pack of 6)

$21, Amazon

Once you’ve finished soaking your oven racks, give it a good scrub with a non-scratch scour like this one by the company that brought us cult-cleaning products Scub Daddy and Scrub Mommy. This scour pad is great because it will buff away stubborn stains without leaving scratches behind. It’s also odour resistant and the firmness of the sponge changes depending on whether you’re cleaning with hot or cold water.

04

Euroscrubby

$4.99, Harris Scarfe

Euroscrubby cloths are excellent at buffing and scrubbing away grime. They’re made from cotton that’s coated with special resin that lifts dirt and stains without etching the surface you’re cleaning.

3. The bathtub method

If you have a large, or double oven, you may not be able to fit the oven racks in the kitchen sink. This is where a bathtub can come in handy. But, before you try any of these methods, protect the bottom of the bathtub with a towel to prevent scratches. Here are some ways to make oven racks sparkle using a bathtub:

Natural

Place oven racks in the bath tub. Sprinkle oven racks with a generous amount of bi-carb soda and fill the tub with hot water until the racks are just covered, adding a few squirts of natural dishwashing liquid into the bath as it fills. Soak the racks overnight before scrubbing and rinsing clean.

Dishwashing tablets

Place the oven racks in the bathtub and fill with enough hot water to cover the racks. Dissolve a dishwashing tablet in the water. Allow the oven racks to soak for an hour or overnight before scrubbing and rinsing clean.

Alternate version: Wrap oven racks in aluminium foil and place a dishwashing tablet inside the foil. Place the foil-covered racks in the bath and fill with hot water until the racks are submerged. Allow to soak overnight before carefully unwrapping the aluminium foil, and scrubbing and rinsing clean. The aluminium foil is thought to increase the shine of the racks and prevent rust spots.

Napisan or laundry boost powder

Place the oven racks in the bathtub and fill with enough hot water to cover the racks. Sprinkle a scoop of Napisan all over the oven racks. Allow the oven racks to soak for an hour or overnight before scrubbing and rinsing clean.

An unattended, filled bath tub can pose a drowning risk for young children. Take care when using this method for cleaning oven racks.

Safety tip

05

It’s also great for brightening tile grout and deoderising your wheelie bin.

4. Heavy duty oven cleaners

Ozkleen Oven Power is a cult-favourite cleaning product you can find at your local supermarket for under $10. It’s powerful, but it does the job. $4.80 (usually $9.60), Woolworths

Head to any online cleaning forum and you’re bound to see one oven cleaning product recommended time and time again: OzKleen’s Oven Power. Do steam cleaners really work on upholstery?

Steam cleaners are extremely effective when it comes to lifting stains and dirt from upholstery. There are a variety of cleaners available to shop, each ranging in form, with some better suited to upholstery than others. When deciding on the cleaner best suited to you and your home, it is important to take note of the inclusion of detergents. Though it is always nice to clear the bacteria as well as the dirt, depending on the material under cleaning, damage may appear.

Which is the best upholstery cleaner?

Any of the models mentioned in our roundup are the best choices when it comes to investing in an upholstery steam cleaner. However, when it comes to narrowing down to the best one for you, there are a few factors to consider, like your cleaning needs, budget and type of furniture you have.

  • Type of upholstery steam cleaner: Do you need a handheld, canister or upright steam cleaner? Handheld steam cleaners are great for apartment living because they’re compact, portable and great for small cleaning jobs or spot treatments. Cansiter steam cleaners have large water tanks and stronger steam pressure for deep cleaning sofas, mattresses and carpets. Upright steam cleaners are best for full-room cleaning, often used for carpets but with attachments for upholstery.
  • Steam power and temperature: Look for a model with high steam pressure and a temperature of at least 100 degrees Celcius to effectively remove stains, bacteria and allergens.
  • Water tank capacity and heat-up time: A steam cleaner with a smaller tank (under 500ml) will heat up faster but require frequent refills. On the other hand, those with larger tanks (over 1L) allow for extended cleaning sessions but will take longer to heat up.
  • Attachments and accessories: Ideally, your chosen steam cleaner should come with additional accessories like an upholstery brush, crevice tool and microfibre pads.
  • Ease of use and portability: Consider the weight, cord length and ergonomics of a steam cleaner to ensure comfort and convenience while cleaning.
  • Budget and rating: Reputable brands like Bissell and Hoover offer a great balance of price and performance. Make sure to read through reviews to check durability, effectiveness and real-work user experiences.
  • Safety features: Added features like automatic shut-off, child locks and adjustable steam settings are essential to prevent overheating or accidental burns.

How to get blood out of carpet https://www.homebeautiful.com.au/cleaning/how-to-get-blood-out-of-carpet/ Tue, 04 Mar 2025 05:28:30 +0000 https://www.homebeautiful.com.au/?p=1265175 Don't let a blood nose ruin your soft flooring.

The post How to get blood out of carpet appeared first on Home Beautiful.

]]>
Whether it’s from a blood nose or a scraped knee, there’s a strong chance you’re going to get blood on your carpet at some stage (especially if you have children). And anyone who has noticed their child’s blood nose a minute too late, will also know how tricky the blood can be to get out of carpet once it’s dry. Unfortunately, the proteins in blood are really good at clinging to fabric fibres, making it quite difficult to remove a dried stain. At the same time, the iron in the blood can oxidise and lead to discoloration, creating quite the macabre sight on your plush flooring.

So, if you’re searching for a solution for your problematic stain (don’t worry, we know there are plenty of innocent reasons for such a sight), we’re here to help. Keep reading to find out exactly how to get blood out of carpet.

Tips for getting blood out of carpet

  • Act fast—try to clean up the blood stain before it dries and becomes harder to get out
  • Only use cold water—hot water will produce the opposite effect, forcing the blood to thicken and set in the fibres of the carpet
  • Dab the stain instead of rubbing it—rubbing will only push it deeper into the carpet

The best way to get blood out of carpet

  1. Apply cold water to the blood stain
  2. Dab the bloodstain with a clean rag
  3. Repeat until the blood stain has been removed
  4. Allow the area to air dry or dry with a fresh, dry rag

If the stain needs a little extra help then you can repeat this process, this time using a dishwashing liquid and cold water solution. Simply add a few drops of dishwashing liquid to some cold water and blot at the stain.

If the blood stain is very stubborn, or has already dried, then you might need a stronger cleaning option, such as hydrogen peroxide or a baking soda and water paste.

Before using a hydrogren peroxide solution, its important to test the solution on a very small, discreet area of the carpet to make sure that it doesn’t cause any discolouration. If you deem it suitable, you can apply a 3% hydrogen peroxide solution to the blood stain and let it sink in for a few minutes. Then dab the stain with a clean cloth until it has completely dissapeared.

If your carpet does react to hydrogen peroxide, or you simply prefer a gentler solution, then a baking soda and water mix is your next best bet. To make this solution, combine baking soda with a little water to make a paste. Then, apply the paste straight onto the stain and let it sit for around half an hour, before starting the cold water method from the beginning.

Keep your home smelling fresh in the best way possible – the eco-friendly way. With eco-friendly natural cleaning products being more readily available (finally), finding ones to incorporate into your cleaning routine is now easier than ever.

These products are made from natural ingredients, encased in eco-friendly packaging, or even better, handmade with common household ingredients. With the demand for eco-friendly and sustainable cleaning products soaring, we see housekeeping coming full circle – begging us to dig out housekeeping books and recipes of yesteryear.

eco-friendly-cleaning-products

Tips for environmentally friendly cleaning in your home

  • Vinegar is your best friend- use it with old newspaper to get a crystal-clear finish on mirrors and glass surfaces
  • Add old citrus peels to vinegar, baking soda and water for a natural cleaner for bench tops that are safe for your family and eschew harsh chemicals. NB: Avoid using lemon and vinegar on marble benchtops, however, as the natural acids will corrode the stone, leaving permanent marks
  • Olive or coconut oil and lemon on an old cloth for polishing wooden furniture is a great natural option and easily accessible from the pantry
  • A few drops of essential oils in the toilet give it a fresh aroma – try orange or eucalyptus

Five ways a lemon can cut through your cleaning jobs

  1. Clean a cutting board by cutting a lemon in half, squeeze the juice onto the board, rub it in with the lemon half, then allow it to sit for 20 minutes. Wipe clean.
  2. Brighten clothes by adding stained items to a pot of water with a few lemon slices and allow to boil for three to five minutes.
  3. Clean stained food containers by squeezing lemon juice onto stained plastic, rub with the cut side of the lemon, let dry, and then rinse off.
  4. Refresh your bathtub with a paste made from baking soda, cream of tartar and a little lemon juice. Wipe paste all over the bathtub and allow it to sit for 30 minutes. Rinse clean with water and a soft cloth.
  5. Clean brass and copper with the cut edge of half a lemon dipped into salt and rubbed onto the surface.

I tried a robot vacuum and mop and my entire house has never been cleaner https://www.homebeautiful.com.au/cleaning/best-robotic-vacuum-mops-australia/ Thu, 23 Jan 2025 21:37:44 +0000 https://www.homebeautiful.com.au/best-robotic-vacuum-mops-australia Keep floors sparkling clean without getting off the couch.

The post I tried a robot vacuum and mop and my entire house has never been cleaner appeared first on Home Beautiful.

]]>
Maintaining a clean floor is difficult at the best of times. Add children and pets to the mix and you can say goodbye to the amusing concept of a ‘weekly’ vacuum. Reclaim your time by outsourcing the chore of a clean floor to a robot vacuum cleaner and mop.

Robotic vacuum cleaner and mop combos have come a long way since they were first introduced. The best models on the market can connect to wifi, be controlled remotely from a smartphone, listen to voice commands, map and clean your entire house automatically, avoid mopping over carpets and rugs, clean to a set schedule and even help you keep an eye on your pets while you’re out.

But will they clean your floors properly? I decided to put one to the test in my own home, and this is what I discovered.

My honest robot vacuum mop review

When it comes to having clean floors, I’ve always been strictly a mop twice with boiling water, detergent and methylated spirits kind of gal. But as a working mum with a crawling toddler on the loose, a never-ending pile of laundry to deal with and messy meal times to stay on top of, cleaning the floor required time and energy I just did not have. Also, having wet tiled floors was a pretty big slip hazard for my little one who just loves to explore. I’d been contemplating investing in a robotic vacuum mop for a while, but was still not convinced it would be worth the investment.

I reached out to Ecovacs for help and they sent me a DEEBOT x1 Plus, a premium robotic vacuum mop that came with two cartridges (one for vacuuming and air-freshening, another for vacuuming and mopping), a cleaning brush and an auto-empty station. It took me an afternoon to set it up but once that was done I started the machine and it set straight to work mapping my home, vacuuming as it went.

Once the robot had perfected the map of my home and detected all of the rugs, it was time to test out the mopping function. All I had to do was fill the tank with distilled water, install the mop pad, hit power and off it went. I recommend following the instruction manual which says to soak the mop pad with water first (something I decided to skip) for a more thorough clean. It automatically mopped around the rugs!

Do robotic vacuum mops really mop properly?

As the machine only uses cold water, I would describe the mopping function as more akin to dusting with a damp cloth than a traditional mop and bucket. It’s certainly not a deep clean, but it will keep dust and minor messes at bay in between proper mops.

The cleaning power of some robotic vacuum mops can be enhanced with the use of a specially formulated robotic mop cleaning solution, while other brands warn against using detergents of any kind. I have to admit I was tempted to add a splash of white vinegar to the water tank and a drop of essential oil and diswashing liquid to the mop pad, but doing so is not recommended as it could cause corrosion in the machine over time.

Despite this, I was impressed by how clean the floors felt underfoot after Alfred had done his thing. While the oscillating function was quite effective at buffing away light stains, I wouldn’t recommend using it for large spills or heavy-duty cleaning.

Do robot vacuums really vacuum properly?

The vacuuming function works really well – the robot’s low profile design made easy work of cleaning under the table, the lounge, beds and other furniture. But does it do the job as well as you would yourself? Well, that’s subjective.

A deep clean where you raise a sweat, delving into every nook and cranny and lift and furniture and objects would get a better result but the point is that with regular, automated cleans, the need for a deep clean is not only less often, it’s so much easier to tackle specific areas because everywhere else is, well, clean!

Using voice commands

Unlike more affordable robot vacuum and mops on the market, The Deebot x1 Plus has its own built-in voice command assistant. Simply say ‘Ok Yiko’ and you can direct it to start cleaning, pause cleaning straight out of the box. This is great if you don’t have many smart home appliances.

If you’d prefer to incorporate the Deebot into an existing smart home ecosystem (such as Amazon Alexa or Google Home, for example) you can do that too. I was able to personalise the vacuum’s nickname (I went with ‘Alfred’) and after making a couple of taps in my Google Home app, the Deebot now responds to commands such as ‘Hey Google, tell Afred to return to the charger’ and away the vacuum goes.

What are the pros of a robot vacuum and mop?

Vacuum mops are handy devices that are well worth the money if maintaining a clean floor currently feels unmanageable.

  • Some models vacuum and mop at the same time, making the task quicker and easier.
  • Once you’ve downloaded the app to your smartphone, you can set an automatic cleaning schedule. So you can set it to clean while you’re asleep, while you’re at work, or just before guests arrive.
  • Advanced models may come with a docking station that empties the dust canister automatically. Top of the range models even have a water refill station.
  • The DEEBOT has a ‘Home Patrol’ function which sends the machine off on a reconnaissance of your entire home. Very handy for keeping an eye on pets while you’re out or seeing what’s under the sofa without having to get down on all fours.

What are the cons of a robotic vacuum mop?

  • You know how you do a quick clean up before a cleaner arrives? You have to do the same thing for a robot vacuum mop. Spend 5-minutes to make sure there are no cords lying around and lift anything off the floor that shouldn’t be there. In saying this, you’ll soon make a habit of not leaving things on the ground, which is actually kind of a pro.
  • Advanced models can easily traverse minor changes in floor height, but if you live in a house that has flooring at significantly different heights (such as an older home with an extension you access via stairs or a step), you may have to manually pick up the robotic vacuum to get the entire area clean. This might be more trouble than it’s worth. Similarly, if you live in a two-storey home, you will have to lift the robotic vacuum upstairs.
  • The mopping function is great for in-between cleans, but won’t replace a traditional mop and bucket. Depending on the model you buy, the mop pad may beed to be removed, cleaned and dried after each use to prevent mildew. The Ecovacs DEEBOT x1 Omni and Dreame W10 Self Cleaning robot vacuum and mop are an exception to this rule, as it rinses and dries the mop pads automatically after each clean.
  • More affordable options will have to be manually emptied and refilled, which can be annoying if your machine aborts mission mid-clean because of an empty water tank or full dustbin.
  • Be warned: kids and pets may (initially) be terrified of the robot! You can get around this by scheduling the machine to run while you’re asleep or while you’re out of the house.

My hacks for getting the most out of a robot vacuum and mop

Personalise the clean: Everything about the way the Deebot cleans can be tailored to your specifications. I like to set the water flow level to ‘high’, vacuum power to ‘max’ and have set it to clean every area twice.

doing this, but I did end up putting a drop of dishwashing liquid and essential oil directly onto the mop pad. I feel like it makes the floors come up so much nicer and leaves my whole house smelling clean and fresh.

Carry it upstairs: I’m not sure why, but I was initially nervous to give the robot free reign upstairs. Now that I’ve tried it, I regret not doing it sooner. I live in a two-storey house, and while carrying the robot upstairs is kind of inconvenient, it sure beats lugging a steaming mop bucket up there (and back down again). The robot is excellent at getting rid of dust bunnies under beds and low furniture (it saves my back, too!). I have a baby gate installed at the top of the stairs, so this prevents the Deebot falling while cleaning. If you don’t have a gate, you can place a temporary boundary in front of the stairs the first time the Deebot cleans (it will map as it goes) and then adjust the map in the phone app to set a virtual boundary for subsequent cleans.

Get multiple reusable mop pads: One thing that might hold you back from using your robot more often is not having multiple mop pads. Invest in a bunch of mop pads from the get-go and you’ll be able to run the mop more frequently and even change out the pad for different rooms so the mop doesn’t use the same pad in the bathroom and then starting cleaning the living room (it just seems a bit unhygienic). You can also program the robot to clean the bathroom and laundry last, if that’s what you prefer.

Essential Deebot Accessories

The verdict

Does the robot replace my trusty stick vacuum and mop and bucket? Not entirely. But, I’ve been living with the Deebot for a few months now and can confidently say that I hardly ever reach for them anymore. Now that the robotic vacuum cleaner takes care of the floors, my entire house is so much cleaner.

My cleaning schedule now looks like an hour or two on the weekends tidying up, scrubbing down the bathroom, dusting surfaces and reorganising my home while the floors pretty much take care of themselves.

Having a robotic vacuum mop is kind of like outsourcing the chore to a teenager, only better. It doesn’t talk back, does a way better cleaning job and you can call out or tap a quick message into your phone to have the whole house vacuumed on demand. No questions asked. You’ll still need to deep clean every now and again, but the task is so much easier as daily dust and grime never gets the chance to build up.

While cheaper models will get the job done, if you want a truly hands-free experience (which is the whole point of getting a robot), I recommend spending that little bit extra for a machine that can empty its own dust compartment, refill the water tank and clean the mop pads automatically.

In the end, I’m so grateful to have Alfred taking care of the floors in my home. There’s nothing like coming home to clean, dust-free tiles without having to lift a finger. Now, when I leave my house, I try to make a habit of picking up any clutter off the floor so Alfred can have free reign while I’m away.

Does keeping your home clean feel like a constant battle? The cleaning cycle can be relentless and while we’d all love full-time hired help, most of us must grin, bear, and get on with it. But while there may be no magic spells to banish dirt and grime away, there are ways to save time, conserve energy, and avoid arguments.

Streamlining your cleaning routine, consolidating your cleaning products, and trying new technologies like the coveted new WINBOT W2 PRO OMNI Window Cleaning Robot by Ecovacs will help you spend less time scrubbing and more time relaxing and enjoying your home. Here are five tips for keeping your house bright and beautiful every day of the week.

1. Create a cleaning schedule

A cleaning schedule can be a lifesaver whether you live alone or with others. Breaking down tasks by frequency and assigning them to household members removes the guesswork, helps maintain overall cleanliness, and reduces the need for labour-intensive cleaning days. It might also prevent a few quarrels.

Divide and conquer your cleaning by creating a schedule.

A schedule may look something like this, with each task allocated to a specific person:

  • Daily: Wipe kitchen counters, sweep kitchen floor, tidy up common areas
  • Weekly: Dust surfaces, spray showers, vacuum floors, mop
  • Monthly: Deep clean bathroom, scrub the oven, clean windows

2. Embrace new technologies

It’s hard to go past the time, energy, and eco-saving powers of robotic cleaners and our futuristic friends just get better. You’ve seen the vacuums that roam around cleaning floors (often with cats sitting on them). Now meet a new generation of window cleaning robots, offering thorough, automated glass maintenance.

Save time, elbow grease and say goodbye to smudges.

The new WINBOT W2 PRO OMNI Window Cleaning Robot by Ecovacs is designed to keep your windows spotless while you take it easy. With a world-class intelligent climbing system, this clever little machine can clean indoors and out, on floor-to-ceiling, framed or frameless, and even tilting windows. Its edge detection and obstacle sensors ensure every corner is attended to, while the anti-drop and safety mechanisms provide peace of mind so you can set it and forget it.

The OMNI station also gives you a choice of power sources, the first of its kind to do so. You can plug it into a power point or use the station as a portable battery with up to 110 minutes of operation when fully charged. The portable mode makes it ideal for areas like balconies or bathrooms without power points, while plugging in is preferable for interior windows with proximity to power.

To make your life even easier, you can control it remotely via an app which offers multiple cleaning modes, omnidirectional remote control, and real-time monitoring. It’s ideal for anyone looking for an effortless solution for crystal-clear windows and more time to do better things.

Clean more than windows for a home that sparkles inside and out.

3. Declutter as you go

Minimalist interiors are popular for more than aesthetics – fewer objects mean less dusting, wiping, and rearranging. But we can’t all live like magazine covers, and cleaning around clutter is time-consuming and ineffective. Prioritise a regular decluttering routine, especially in high-traffic areas. Make house members responsible for their own clutter. Save time and energy for the things you love.

Keep clutter to a minimum by ensuring everything has a place.

4. Adopt a top-to-bottom routine

If you prefer to clean one room at a time, try working from the ceiling down. This prevents backtracking and ensures that debris from upper levels doesn’t fall on freshly cleaned furniture and floors. Start with high surfaces like ceiling fans, light fixtures, and shelves, dusting and wiping your way down to the floor. Finish with vacuuming or mopping and a well-earned pat on the back.

DIY or set and forget with all-in-one technology from Ecovacs.

To help you get into every nook and cranny up high and down low, the DEEBOT T30S COMBO Robot Vacuum and Mop can’t be beaten. The all-in-one cleaning hub adds automated mopping to a class-leading robot and handheld vacuum. Use the handheld for elevated and vertical areas, then let the robot work its magic on your floors.

5. Choose multi-use products

All-purpose products are the unsung heroes of home cleaning – they’re cost-efficient, reduce cupboard clutter, and save you time switching between products. Opt for multi-surface sprays safe for wood, glass, and countertops, and those with disinfecting properties.

Alternatively, try pantry staple power couple white vinegar and baking soda. Together, the duo can tackle almost any mess and are free of the harsh chemicals in many commercial cleaners. Vinegar’s natural acidity cuts through grease and fights bacteria and mould; while baking soda works wonders on tough stains, odours, and grime.

With organisation, set routines, and help from our new robot friends your home can be spick and span day in and out. All that’s left to do is decide how to spend all your extra free time.

7 of the best dehumidifiers to help combat damp homes https://www.homebeautiful.com.au/cleaning/best-dehumidifier-australia/ Wed, 25 Sep 2024 05:24:06 +0000 https://www.homebeautiful.com.au/best-dehumidifier-australia It's time to clear the air.

The post 7 of the best dehumidifiers to help combat damp homes appeared first on Home Beautiful.

]]>
When wet weather hits, it’s important to ensure your home is well-prepared for any resulting dampness, which can result in mould growth and general property damage. One appliance that will help you tackle indoor humidity in extreme weather conditions is a dehumidifier.

There are two types of dehumidifiers available in stores: desiccant dehumidifiers and compressor humidifiers. Colin Jones, category expert at Appliances Online says selecting the best dehumidifier will depend on your home and the climate you live in.

Here, we run through the different types of dehumidifiers, find out whether dehumidifiers can get rid of mould, and round up seven of the best machines to prevent dampness from wreaking havoc in your home.

Compressor vs desiccant dehumidifiers

“Compressor dehumidifiers, also known as refrigerant dehumidifiers, draw air in, cool it to condense water into a water tank, reheat it, then expel the warmer air back into the room. This makes them ideal for warmer areas,” says Colin.

Desiccant dehumidifiers, on the other hand, “use a wheel to absorb moisture from the humid air, while an internal heater heats the damp sections to condense  the water into a tank. Since they don’t utilise a compressor, desiccant dehumidifiers often have a lower noise level when compared to other models.

Do dehumidifiers get rid of mould?

Dehumidifiers can purify the air and remove excess moisture that can lead to mould growth, but they won’t get rid of the mould itself, says Dee Carter, professor in microbiology at the University of Sydney. “They are a treatment but not a cure. But they are good for times when there is uncharacteristic mould growth.”

Signs you need a dehumidifier

“There are several signs that high humidity levels are having an impact on your home,” says Colin. “You’re likely to find water stains on your walls or windows, smell a musty scent in a specific area, and find small amounts of mould beginning to appear. You may also notice windows beginning to look foggy.”

Choosing a dehumidifier

Dehumidifiers come in various shapes and sizes. Portable or mini versions are great for smaller rooms, while larger units are perfect for the lounge. Nonetheless, a dehumidifier works to control a room’s, well, humidity by removing excess moisture in the air. And, by doing so, it also helps eliminate odours, prevents mould growth and ultimately makes your home more comfortable to live in.

Like a breath of fresh air for your home, these are the best dehumidifiers you need on your radar for the wet and muggy season ahead.

Welcome to the world of crease-less clothing with a high-quality steam iron https://www.homebeautiful.com.au/laundry-ideas/best-steam-iron-australia/ Wed, 12 Jun 2024 06:55:58 +0000 https://www.homebeautiful.com.au/?p=1053298 Let us put a spotlight on this humble (but necessary) home appliance.

The post Welcome to the world of crease-less clothing with a high-quality steam iron appeared first on Home Beautiful.

]]>
There is something so satisfying about freshly ironed clothes. From the comforting warmth it gives to the smell of fresh laundry to, most importantly, the crease-less appearance of your favourite garments and linens – these are just a few simple joys that come as a result of the, well, less enjoyable chore of ironing.

And how does one achieve crease-less shirts and crisp linens? With a humble steam iron, of course. It is not a revolutionary home appliance but a very necessary one. That’s why finding a model that works well is crucial.

What to look for when buying a steam iron

So, what should you look out for when buying a steam iron? There are a few key factors to consider.

  1. Adjustable steam output – finding a steam iron that allows you to control the amount of steam it produces is crucial. This is because, depending on the type of material you’re ironing, you will need to adjust the steam output accordingly.
  2. Soleplate construction – arguably, one of the most important elements of a steam iron is its soleplate. Make sure the soleplate of your steam iron is made from high-quality materials. This is because this is the part of the iron that will come in contact (or very close to) with your clothes/linens.
  3. Auto shut-off – most steam irons have safety features such as auto shut-off. And when life gets busy, having this safety feature is a must.

Keep your carpets fresher for longer with these top-rated carpet cleaners for the home https://www.homebeautiful.com.au/cleaning/best-carpet-cleaner-australia/ Wed, 12 Jun 2024 06:14:57 +0000 https://www.homebeautiful.com.au/?p=1065508 As good as new.

The post Keep your carpets fresher for longer with these top-rated carpet cleaners for the home appeared first on Home Beautiful.

]]>
There are many reasons why many of us prefer carpets over tiled or timber floors. Carpets instantly add warmth and cosiness to your space, and their plush feel is pretty difficult to beat. However, while there is a lot to love about carpets, the maintenance that comes with them may cause a few headaches.

Although many either rent a carpet cleaner from the local supermarket or turn to professional carpet cleaning companies to do the job, investing in your own carpet cleaner may be a good idea for those who live in a fully or partly carpeted home in the long run.

Renting a carpet cleaner from your local supermarket may be good for those who are tight on space – or those who are renting. However, these units are usually older models that are subject to wear and tear from previous renters, resulting in a less effective clean. And when you’ve put in all the effort towards this intrinsically tiresome chore, it’s only fair to expect perfectly shampooed carpets in the end.

So, if you have the space to store a carpet cleaner (when not in use) and you have the means to invest in one for your home, we’d highly recommend you do so. Plus, you’ll be able to eliminate the time that is spent driving to your local supermarket and lugging the heavy unit into your car and home- it’s a win-win in our books.

The best carpet cleaners in Australia 2024

There are a few key aspects to consider when investing in a carpet cleaner (more on this, later). Below, we’ve picked out the top carpet cleaners that are worth investing in, with special cleaning features, price points, and size and portability in mind.

What to look for when buying a carpet cleaner?

Below are a few key specs to look out for when investing in a carpet cleaner for the home.

  1. Size

Size and capacity of your carpet cleaner boils down to how often or how big your space is that you’ll be cleaning. A small-capacity carpet cleaner may be troublesome if you need to empty the tank mid-way through a cleaning task. However, these smaller-capacity units are perfect for spot-cleaning.

Further, upright carpet cleaners tend to take up quite a bit of space in your cleaning cupboard, so to prevent future headaches, make sure you know where you’ll be storing your new carpet cleaner and that it’ll fit within its newly designated area within the home.

  2. Special cleaning features

Like many home appliances these days, special tech features are highly sought after. Most carpet cleaners should have rotating brushes and heating capabilities to clean and dry your carpet. While more advanced features like temperature control or auto-dispensing can be found in newer models – which have proven to be great time-savers in the long run.

  3. Included accessories

If you have carpeted stairs or plan to use your carpet cleaner in your car and on upholstery within the home, looking out for versatile attachments will be a game-changer. Specialised crevice tools to reach under car seats or similar are worth looking into.

One of the hardest workers in the household is the humble washing machine. Simplifying a once-tiresome chore to something much more manageable, we have the modern-day washing machine to thank for all the extra time we’ve gained to do things we enjoy (like sipping a mocktail under the afternoon sun).

When it comes to choosing a washing machine for your laundry room, there are a few elements to consider, such as the size of the laundry room, the quality of the model, as well as whether you’d like to opt for a front loader, top loader or a washer/dryer combo.

If you’re looking to save on space, a washer/dryer combo is your best bet – two units in one. However, if you prefer having separate units for these (very different) tasks, opting for a front-loader washing machine is still a relatively space-saving option. It opens up the vertical space in your laundry room to store extra laundry essentials such as laundry powder, baskets, and more.

So, if you’re looking to invest in a new front-loader washing machine, you’re at the right place. Below, you’ll find our top picks and everything you need to know before you make your purchase.

Why should I buy a front-load washing machine?

Compared to its rival – the top-loading washing machine – there are a few key differences worth considering. From space-saving features to customisable wash cycles, below we list the advantages of buying a front-loading washing machine.

  • Energy and water efficiency: As the drums of a front-loading washing machine are horizontal, it uses gravity to help tumble clothes, which, as a result, requires less energy and water to operate.
  • Gentler on clothes: Its drum design rotates horizontally to tumble your clothes. This means there is no need for a central agitator (found in top-loader washing machines). Agitators are more abrasive in comparison.
  • Space-saving design: One of the main reasons many choose to opt for a front-loader washing machine is the fact that vertical space in your laundry can be used optimally. Some like to use this extra space to install a dryer or storage solutions for laundry day needs, such as laundry powder, baskets, and more.

What is better, a top-loader or front-loader washing machine?

As with any purchase decision, whether a specific model is ‘better’ depends on your needs and preferences. There are pros and cons for both front-loader and top-loader washing machines.

As mentioned, front-loader washing machines are known to be more energy and water-efficient than top-loader washers. Along with a lighter electricity and water bill, a front-loader washing machine is also a good option if your laundry room is smaller, as you can free up vertical space in your laundry for other storage needs. However, the most notable disadvantage of a front-loader is the need to bend down to load your washing machine with your clothes. If bending over isn’t an issue for you, then a front-loader will be perfect.

In comparison, a top-loader is a good option for those who use their washing machine often, as loading and unloading your laundry will be much easier on the back. Furthermore, top-loaders have a lower initial cost in comparison to front-loaders. However, in exchange, a top-loader washing machine features an agitator which is known to be more abrasive on clothes. So, if you love your silks, woollens, and more, a front-loader washing machine may be more suitable for you.

What is the lifespan of a front-loader washing machine?

The lifespan of a front-loader washing machine will depend on the model you purchase, how you maintain it, and how often you use it. A good-quality front-load washer generally lasts between 10-15 years.

To maximise the lifespan of your unit, always follow the manufacturer’s guidelines on use and maintenance.

If the eyes are the windows to the soul, then your windows say a lot about your house. The beautiful windows we installed in our house when we renovated were, for me, one of the most significant changes to the way we live here. Inspired by loft living in New York, we chose big, vintage-style steel framed windows that open up the back of our house to reveal trees we never knew existed.

My husband cleans the windows downstairs every year for our Christmas party but the upstairs is my domain and these windows were starting to look a bit… gross. Filthy, inside and out. I’ve been sitting up here writing for Home Beautiful for months now looking out at the lovely view, while a growing film of grime has begun to obscure the trees and sky beyond the confines of my office.

This weekend was sunny, breezy and a lovely day to be outside. I stopped scrolling and resolved to clean my windows. While cleaning them I realised how easy it was and wanted to share the process because moving from window to window, one after the other was so satisfying that I went on to do the internal windows using the same method. They’re so clean! There’s neither a mark nor streak on them and I used my shower squeegee to do the job. It’s so easy. You can listen to a podcast while doing it, or your favourite music… even work. I dictated this story to you while I cleaned my windows.

How to clean your windows
This is me, loving my clean windows! (Credit: Photography: Cath Muscat / Styling: John Mangila)

Now, I’m not about to tell you to waste your whole afternoon, and don’t think I’m a person with a super clean house – I’m a bare minimum kind of girl and not a great housekeeper – if it doesn’t need doing, I won’t do it. But these windows were starting to annoy me and impair my view. So I’m sharing what I think is a brilliant hack to make you feel better every single day of the week.

Here’s what you need to do.

What you need to clean your windows yourself

  • Two clean buckets
  • Two clean rags
  • One washcloth or cleaning mitt
  • Two towels
  • One squeegee

How to clean your windows

Step 1 Fill your buckets

Fill one bucket with warm water and a few drops of dishwashing liquid. Not too much, you need only a tiny bit.

Fill the second bucket. With clean, cold water.

Step 2: Wash with soapy water

Roll one towel into a sausage and place it on the windowsill beneath the first window.

Using the cleaning cloth or mitt, wash the window from top to bottom, left to right, until the entire window has been soaped up. Redo with soapy water to ensure you wash away the grime.

Step 3: Rinse with clean water

On the same window, use the bucket of clean water and one clean cloth to rewash the window. This time it’s more like a rinse. Use the same action as when washing the window, working from top to bottom, left to right to wipe away soapy water, leaving a clean, wet window. Continue to the bottom, allowing the rolled-up towel to catch any drips or splashes.

Step 4: Squeegee excess water

Using the squeegee, work from top to bottom, left to right to draw the squeegee blade across the window. Repeat if necessary, working within the frame for a clean finish with no water or streaks remaining.

Step 5: Dry the drips

Use the second clean rag to dry the windowsill and frame, again working from top to bottom, left to right in a gentle movement. Remove any water that has pooled in the frame or corners of your window sill. Move your towel sausage to the next window and begin the process again from step one.

Not only does this method leave you with clean, streak-free windows using not only the most basic equipment, I can also guarantee a real sense of satisfaction.

It’s best to clean your windows on a warm day in absorbant clothing. Water may drip down your arm into your armpits!

I did this process in the afternoon on my office windows which have many panes and dirt on the outside, and more spotty and a bit cloudy with small spots of mould on the inside. The dishwashing detergent removed this with no problem at all. My efforts resulted in beautifully clean windows I’m looking out of as I write the rest of this story.

What’s surprising about this process is how quick and easy it was, and how satisfying. You don’t need to pay for a window cleaner, any special equipment or store-bought window cleaning products. The results were so good. Full disclosure: this is my husband’s method, so I can’t take the credit. He says you’re welcome.

Let me know if you try it yourself!

There’s a wise viral TikTok voiceover that says: “I think that by far the biggest lesson I’ve learned in my 30s is that no matter how hard you try, no matter how well you do it, you’re going to have to clean your kitchen again tomorrow.”

Cleaning the kitchen is a Sisyphean task – you’re always doing it, but somehow the job just never seems done! But clean it you must, because it’s the kind of room that needs to be kept germ free in order to fulfill its primary purpose: to provide a safe, hygienic and efficient place to prepare food. General disarray, cooking smells and odours from unwashed dishes or wilting fruit can also make your entire house seem messy, which is why, if you’re thinking of undertaking a full house clean, you must start in the kitchen.

The next area many professional cleaners claim should be next on the list, however, is the bathroom. The logic behind this is that the kitchen and bathroom are both frequently used ‘wet areas’ that can become a breeding ground for germs, mould spores and soap scum if not cleaned regularly. These rooms also take the longest to clean, so tackling them first will make you feel super accomplished as you enter rooms that are generally easier to tidy, including the living room, bedrooms and common areas.

Daily kitchen cleaning checklist

  • Wash and dry dishes or stack the dishwasher and run it
  • Clean counters following an S-curve pattern with a warm, soapy cloth
  • To disinfect the counters, apply a surface disinfectant and allow it to sit for at least 10-minutes (check the product label, some disinfectants may need to be diluted with water and rinsed afterwards, while others do not). If cleaning natural stone benchtops, steer clear of abrasive scours or hash cleaning products.
  • Wipe down stovetop and clean oven using Shannon Lush’s 5-minute oven-cleaning method.
  • Put away dried dishes and disinfect the sink
  • Sweep or vacuum floor
  • Mop the floor

Deep kitchen cleaning checklist

Fridge and freezer

  • Clear out the fridge by discarding spoiled leftovers or anything that’s past its use-by date
  • Wipe down shelves using a damp, soapy cloth
  • Wipe down seals with a solution of one part water to one part white vinegar
  • Remove the crisper tray and wash with warm soapy water. Rinse and allow to dry before replacing it back in the fridge.
  • Defrost freezer (if required) discarding anything that’s past its best then wipe down the inside with hot soapy water.

Pantry and cupboards

  • Next up: decluttering kitchen cupboards. Remove items from pantry one shelf at a time. Discard any spoiled food.
  • Wipe down pantry storage containers and shelving with a damp cloth to remove surface dust. For debris stuck in pantry crevices, use a dry cleaning brush or a vacuum cleaner.
  • Group items according to their purpose and place back on the pantry shelves
  • Get out a ladder and wipe down the tops of upper cabinets (if they’re not concealed by a bulk head) with a solution of Selleys Sugar Soap and water.
  • Wipe down kick boards with soapy water and, if there are any visible scuff marks, buff them out with a magic eraser or gentle scrubbing brush.
  • Wipe down cabinet fronts with soapy water.
  • Wipe down cabinet handles with isopropyl alcohol.
  • Do a stocktake of your kitchen cabinets: are there any pots, pans, utensils or small appliances you rarely use? Consider giving them away or donating them to charity to free up space.

Appliances

  • Now it’s time to spring clean your home appliances. Move appliances forward and vacuum and wipe behind and underneath them.
  • Empty the toaster crumb tray.
  • Refresh your kettle by filling it with water, adding 1 tablespoon of baking soda and boiling it. Allow boiling water to sit for 10-minutes before emptying the kettle and wiping the inside clean with a soft cloth or gentle dish brush. Rinse.
  • Clean and deoderise the inside of the microwave using the steam and white vinegar method.
  • Clean the dishwasher by running it on a hot cycle and washing the filter and thoroughly.
  • Clean rangehood filters.
  • Descale your coffee machine, if you have one.
  • Remove any old documents stuck to the front of the fridge, discard any unsightly magnets that may have accumulated and wipe down the front of the fridge, paying close attention to the handles.

Glassware, crockery and cookware

  • Make all of your ‘special occasion’ glassware and china sparkle again. Remove everything from the cabinet and wash by hand (place a tea-towel in the bottom of the sink to prevent breakages) or run a gentle dishwasher cycle.
  • Discard any plates or glasses that are chipped or cracked.
  • Get all stainless steel pots and pans sparkling clean by rubbing them down with a paste made up of water and baking soda. Rinse.
  • Re-season any cast-iron cookware

General

  • Wipe down window sills with a damp cloth
  • Wash curtains, or wipe blinds with a damp cloth
  • Soak kitchen cleaning cloths and sponges in a disinfectant solution before laundering in hot water and allowing to dry. Discard any sponges or cloths that are past their best.
  • Soak cleaning brushes in a disinfectant solution before rinsing thoroughly and allowing to dry.
  • Empty bin and wash thoroughly with a solution of hot soapy water. Wipe down with surface disinfectant. Allow to dry before placing back it in the kitchen.
  • Sweep or vacuum the floor, taking care to get underneath and behind the fridge and any other freestanding appliances
  • Mop twice with a solution of hot water, soap and surface disinfectant.

What are the different types of cordless vacuum cleaners?

There are a few main types of cordless vacuum cleaners, and they are built for different jobs. So, it’s important you’re choosing the right one for your needs, space and preference.

Cordless stick vacuums

A cordless stick vacuum runs on a battery that you can recharge after each use. It is portable and lightweight, making it a great option for spot-cleaning the home during the week. It comprises of a ‘stick’ and a dustbin/battery compartment that is usually located at the top or bottom of the unit.

Robot vacuums

Maybe you don’t find satisfaction in watching your clear dustbin of a cordless stick vacuum fill up, then a robot vacuum is perfect for you. These clever units can vacuum the entire house without you lifting a finger. And some even have auto-emptying functions making this chore a chore no more.

Can you clean a whole house with a cordless vacuum?

Whether you can clean a whole house with a cordless vacuum will entirely depend on two factors. The first and most important is the run time – or battery life – of your machine. The longer the stated run time of your vacuum the more likely you are to be able to clean your whole house in one go without having to stop and recharge your machine between rooms. The second factor is the number of tools and accessories your vacuum comes equipped with. Cordless vacuums with handy accessories such as a crevice tool will help you clean hard to reach places, and the greater the number of brush heads you are provided with the more versatile your vacuum is and the more likely you are to be able to clean your whole house – floors, upholstery and all – in one go.

Cleaning the bathroom is a chore most people want to finish, so it’s no surprise that few people even consider how to clean your shower head. It’s an essential part of keeping your shower hygienically clean and ensuring a steady flow of water. However, with most of the action centred around cleaning the shower screen and brightening the tile grout, it’s all happening at eye level, and the shower head is an easy detail to forget.

Depending on your water quality and where you live, mineral deposits can build up over time with normal use, leaving unsightly marks and clogging your shower head. We’re here to help with our latest bathroom cleaning tip, and the best part is you can avoid harsh chemicals and use things you already have at home!

What’s the best thing to clean your shower head with?

  • White vinegar
  • 1 x sturdy plastic bag
  • 1 x sturdy rubber band
  • 1 x old toothbrush
  • 1 x clean cloth

How to clean a shower head

Prepare your materials and, if possible, remove your shower head from the pipe attachment by unscrewing the thread. If you cannot separate the shower head from the pipe, grab a sturdy step stool and reach up to clean the shower head in place.

Soak the shower head before cleaning for the best results, by simply filling your plastic bag with enough vinegar to submerge and completely cover the shower head and securing it with the rubber band. Leave overnight or for at least one hour to break down any mineral deposits.

Scrub the surface after soaking, by removing the bag with vinegar and rinsing the shower head. Then use an old toothbrush to scrub the surface of your showerhead, getting into the tiny holes (use a toothpick if necessary!), nooks and crannies to remove grimy residue.

Replace the shower head onto the pipe and fix it securely in place. Rinse thoroughly with clean water and wipe clean with a soft cloth. Repeat this process every six months to keep your shower head clean.

Remove hard-to-budge grime by rubbing marks with a paste made from a mixture of bicarb soda and a small amount of water, or try lemon juice for added grunt.

10 quick cleaning tasks you should be doing daily https://www.homebeautiful.com.au/cleaning/house-cleaning-tips/ Sat, 23 Mar 2024 03:45:43 +0000 https://www.homebeautiful.com.au/house-cleaning-tips Adopting these 10 habits will have your home sparkling in no time!

The post 10 quick cleaning tasks you should be doing daily appeared first on Home Beautiful.

]]>
Some people make keeping a tidy home seem so simple, while others constantly seem to find themselves faced with a mountain of housework, dishes, laundry (i.e. small chores that have snowballed into mammoth tasks). If you’re firmly in the latter camp, there’s still time to develop new habits that will make keeping a tidy home a whole lot easier.

That’s because keeping a home tidy isn’t about working harder; it’s about working smarter by doing small household tasks daily.

Here are 10 daily cleaning tasks that will help you say goodbye to the concept of spring cleaning for good – because your home will be tidy all year round!

1. Make your bed every day

Set aside just three minutes every morning to make your bed. Regardless of the style or storage situation elsewhere in your bedroom, a freshly made bed makes you feel in control and on top of your day. Everything will follow from here.

2. Always load your dishwasher at the end of the day

Clearing away the dishes after a meal is one thing but loading your dishwasher and handwashing your pots and pans, knives and chopping boards will ensure you wake up to a spotless kitchen each morning.

Make a habit of loading up your dishwasher and setting it to run before wiping down the sink and benches. Then, make your home smell amazing by spritzing a little air freshener or homemade linen spray.

Begin the next day by unloading it for an empty dishwasher ready to handle the meals to come.

3. Keep unavoidable clutter contained

Shoes, hats, dog leads, and umbrellas collect in your entrance hall—and not all are attractive. With daily use, they tend to look untidy if not given adequate storage.

Choose a set of drawers or freestanding baskets to organise your hallway and style it up with decorative hooks and holders to create a stylish welcome to your home.

4. Tidy bathroom vanity after use

Always put away your makeup and grooming products after use and wipe down your bathroom or ensuite vanity each morning. Keeping a stack of reusable microfibre cloths in the bathroom cabinet is handy for this task.

Organising the cupboard beneath the vanity will ensure there’s a place for everything so you can easily pack away daily items to keep clutter at bay.

Wipe out the basin and replace the hand towel daily.

5. Put things away after you’ve used them

Repeat after me: don’t put it down, put it away. There’s a reason this mantra has gone viral on TikTok – because it works! A few examples:

  • Once dinner is over, put the olive oil, salt, pepper and other ingredients away
  • Once you’ve finished scrubbing the house, put the caddy of cleaning products back into the laundry
  • If you return home after a heavy gym session, don’t just kick your shoes off and leave them at the door – put them away!
  • Adopting this simple habit will see the clutter in your home drastically reduced.

6. Invest in a lightweight vacuum cleaner

Easy to carry around your house and kept within easy reach, a portable vacuum cleaner is the answer to your incidental cleaning woes.

Rather than lugging the whole unit everywhere, you’re more likely to grab a stick or hand-held dust buster for quick clean-ups and to whip around high-traffic areas in no time.

Check out our roundup of the best cordless stick vacuum cleaners if you need help deciding on the right model for your home.

7. Start a system to organise paperwork

A simple filing system for keeping and storing paperwork and receipts will not only save you time looking for papers, but it will also keep surfaces in your home clear of papers building up in piles.

A cheap file organiser or set of chic drawers works well for keeping receipts, school notes, invitations and invoices ordered and handy.

8. Keep a cleaning cloth in each room

Having a small sponge or cleaning cloth in each room will make incidental clean-ups easier and more likely to happen. Tuck a sponge behind your vanity or in the corner cupboard, keep one in your bathroom and laundry for daily wipe-downs and hide dusting cloths at the back of bookshelves or cupboards in your home office or rooms removed from the kitchen or laundry where you store cleaning equipment.

Hot tip: Paper towels are great for cleaning up spills quickly and efficiently. Keeping a roll on the kitchen benchtop – or in every room, as suggested above – will ensure you don’t feel like you’re always cleaning as you’re able to ‘clean as you go’. Our favourite paper towels at the moment are the Viva regular multi-purpose Cleaning Towels. They’re versatile, absorbent and durable, making them ideal for a wide range of cleaning jobs.

Shop Viva at various retailers such as Woolworths or Amazon.

9. Empty your bin often

Rather than letting kitchen and household rubbish bins pile up into a groaning, bag-splitting mess, empty your kitchen tidy and recycling bin often. This is a great job for children learning to contribute to housekeeping if you make it fun.

Wiping down the inside of your bin with a paper towel each time you this will keep things clean and hygienic. Place small bins into each room in your home – bedrooms, bathrooms and home office to ensure litter doesn’t collect.

10. Add indoor plants to your home

Not only a beautiful addition visually, indoor plants purify your air and keep you healthy, offsetting chemicals thrown off by plastics and finishes found in your home. You can find a variety of indoor plants that’ll suit your preference and lifestyle at an array of nurseries or (even better) online. One of our favourite places to shop for plants online is Oldboy’s Flowers. You can buy indoor or outdoor plants as well as seedlings if you’re big on gardening.

How to master the art of keeping shower glass clean https://www.homebeautiful.com.au/cleaning/how-to-clean-shower-glass/ Thu, 29 Feb 2024 02:10:56 +0000 https://www.homebeautiful.com.au/?p=1060185 Turn cloudy into crystal clear.

The post How to master the art of keeping shower glass clean appeared first on Home Beautiful.

]]>
Shower screen looking frosty even though it’s supposed to be crystal clear? Yep, that’s a build-up of old soap, mineral deposits and goodness-only-knows-what, aka a surefire signal that you need to clean your shower glass. While cleaning sages often espouse the benefits of a post-shower squeegee session, if you somehow missed the memo and have neglected the shower glass for far too long, never fear, it is possible to get it sparkling like new again.

There are many reasons why it’s important to keep your shower screen clean. Firstly, it’s often the most prominent feature in your bathroom – if the shower glass is clean, people will assume the rest of the bathroom is clean too. Secondly, soap scum (the name given to the white film that builds up on a shower screen over time) is the perfect breeding ground for bacteria and mould. Then there’s the fact that leaving it, rather than tackling it head-on, is a mistake cleaning expert Barb di Corti, CEO and founder of Enjo, sees time and time again. “Allowing soap scum, water stains and mildew to build up over time makes it much harder to clean the shower screen later,” she says.

Here, we run through the best ways to maintain clean shower glass, how to clean a shower screen using zero harsh chemicals, how to remove calcium deposits from shower glass before wrapping up with some tips on how to prevent or reduce soap scum build up in future.

First thing’s first, make sure what you’re dealing with is actually just soap scum. The way I see it, there are two main reasons you’re reading this article. The first is that you’re not entirely sure of the best and easiest way to clean shower glass. The second, is that you’ve already thrown everything at the glass and it still looks cloudy. If you’re in the latter camp, you could be dealing with a problem known, rather ominously, as ‘glass cancer’ in cleaning circles.

Glass cancer basically means that moisture, product residue and debris has made its way into the inner layer of the screen, becoming trapped. One way to work out if this is the case is to carefully take a razor blade to an inconspicuous area of the the glass and scrape it gently. If the cloudy film comes off onto the blade, it’s soap scum. If not, you can assume it’s glass cancer and that no amount of cleaning will remove the cloudy appearance.

Is it soap scum or glass cancer?

How to clean shower glass

If the sheer amount of shower cleaning videos are anything to go by (a search for #showerglass on TikTok, for example, brings up almost 3000 videos) then it’s safe to say there’s more than one way to clean shower glass. I always like to start with the simplest method that uses the least amount of chemicals.

Cleaning expert, Barb di Corti, CEO and founder of Enjo agrees. “It’s my preference to avoid harsh chemical cleaners due to their effects on our health, particularly the respiratory system from breathing in chemical fumes,” says Barb.

The other reason I prefer to use less chemicals is that it requires less rinsing. Old-fashioned bathroom cleansers like Jif or Sugar Soap, for example, may be great at powering through layers of soap scum, but they’re also difficult to rinse away and often leave behind their own cloudy residue.

“Always work from top to bottom,” says Barb. “Cleanest areas to the dirtiest.”

The #1 shower cleaning tip to remember

How to clean shower glass naturally

What you’ll need:

Cleaning shower glass when water just doesn’t cut it

Water and microfibre didn’t quite cut through the scum that’s accumulated on your shower? Here are some other methods you can try to boost the process and dial down the elbow grease.

  • Spray undiluted white vinegar on the shower screen and allow it to sit for 5-10 minutes. Wipe away soap scum with a microfibre cloth.
  • Wet the shower screen. Apply a drop of dishwashing liquid to a damp, non-scratch scour sponge and buff away the soap scum using circular motions. Rinse well and dry thoroughly.
  • Wet the shower screen. Generously sprinkle a damp sponge with bi-carb soda. Using circular motions, buff away at the soap scum before rinsing well and drying thoroughly.
  • Wet the shower screen. Dampen a magic eraser and, using circular motions, buff away the soap scum. Rinse well and dry thoroughly.
  • Spray the shower screen with The Pink Stuff Miracle Bathroom Foam Cleaner, allow to sit for 30 seconds. Wipe away with a damp microfibre cloth. Dry with a clean microfibre cloth. Repeat for stubborn stains.

How to clean calcium build up on shower glass

If white marks are still plaguing your shower screen, you could be dealing with calcium and limescale build-up. If you live in an area with hard water, calcium deposits can harden on the shower glass, making things that were once crystal clear appear milky or even opaque. Elbow grease alone probably won’t solve this one.

A natural way to remove hard water build-up on a shower screen is by spraying the shower screen generously with undiluted white vinegar. Allow the vinegar to sit for 10 minutes before scrubbing with a non-abrasive scour pad or a Magic Eraser.

If vinegar doesn’t penetrate the hard water buildup, products like CLR can be used to dissolve it quickly. The active ingredient in CLR is lactic acid, which eats away at the limescale build-up to reveal glistening, gleaming glass. You can also use CLR on other parts of the shower that are coated in limescale build up including taps and shower head. CLR is a corrosive products, so take care when handling and wear protective gloves and clothing while using it.

How often should you clean your shower glass?

Once you get a grubby shower screen gleaming again, the best plan of attack is to clean it regularly – like once a week regularly. I know, I know, it’s probably not what you want to hear. But regular shower screen cleans are the key to a speedy whole bathroom clean, as opposed to the type of bathroom clean you block out half a day for (you know the one). If you want to make bathroom cleaning day even easier, it’s best to dry your shower screen using a squeegee or a microfibre cloth after each use.

5 ways to prevent soap scum and hard water stains building up on shower glass

  • Quickly rinse off shower walls and glass with water after showering to wash away soap and shampoo residue before they dry.
  • Dry the shower after each use. You can use either a towel, microfibre cloth or a squeegee.
  • Clean the shower screen at least once weekly. Quick, frequent cleans prevent stains from building up and becoming more difficult to remove. You can keep a dish wand pre-loaded with dishwashing liquid in the shower for this purpose.
  • If you live in a hard water zone, consider installing a hard-water filter on your shower.
  • Swap bar soap for liquid body wash. Liquid body wash creates markedly less soap scum build-up.

3 easy ways to clean and brighten tile grout https://www.homebeautiful.com.au/cleaning/grout-cleaning-hack/ Mon, 26 Feb 2024 05:56:51 +0000 https://www.homebeautiful.com.au/grout-cleaning-hack Keep tiled surfaces in your home sparkling clean.

The post 3 easy ways to clean and brighten tile grout appeared first on Home Beautiful.

Tiles can make or break a room – but even the most beautiful tiles can be let down by grimy or discoloured grout. Many traditional grout cleaners on the market are harsh, smell terrible, contain chlorine bleach or just simply don’t produce results good enough to justify their use (or their price tag).

Fortunately, you’ve probably got all of the ingredients required to make a powerful grout cleaner sitting in your kitchen and laundry cupboards.

Here we run through 3 grout cleaning methods that will have your bathroom, tiled floors and splash backs looking good as new.

1. Napisan

Professional cleaner Rebekka Ladner aka the Queen of Clean, has revealed her secret hack for cleaning grout on tiled floors – and it’s caused a stir on social media. She used Vanish Napisan Gold Pro Stain Removal Powder to clean her tiled floors.

“I’ve done the whole baking soda/vinegar … and that’s way too time-consuming with very little result,” she said. “I’ve used long life grout cleaner too. Some people swear by it [but] I’m not a fan and the smell is horrendous,” she added. “Plus long life grout cleaner is $10 a bottle. It ends up costing a fair bit.”

She adds two scoops of Napisan to a bucket of water and spreads it over the tiles before scrubbing with a stiff broom. Then she rinses the tiles and mops again, this time with hot water and methylated spirits.

The dirty ‘before’ and sparkling clean ‘after’ photos speak for themselves.

Note: Napisan is an eye and skin irritant. Be sure to wear protective clothing and rubber gloves when using and avoid direct contact of powder with skin or eyes.

2. Hydrogen Peroxide

Hydrogen peroxide has so many uses, and it’s especially good at brightening discoloured grout. Unlike vinegar, which can corrode the grout over time, hydrogen peroxide is a gentle disinfectant that is non-toxic – when used correctly.

To clean grout, simply pour undiluted hydrogen peroxide into a spray bottle. Spray all over grout and allow to sit for 15-20 minutes.

Hydrogen peroxide can irritate eyes, skin and the respiratory system, so only use it in a well-ventilated space and wear gloves and protective goggles.

Once the time has passed, scrub the grout with a grout brush or non-scratch scour sponge. Rinse clean.

3. Lemon and baking soda

If finding an all-natural way to clean grout is your top priority, try making lemonade! Fresh lemon juice has been used as a super stain-fighting solution for centuries. To clean up grimy grout, simply combine lemon juice with baking soda to create a paste. Use a stiff brush to apply the paste to the grout. Allow the solution to sit for 15-20 minutes before rinsing well.

The reason this works is because lemons are rich in citric acid, which is a natural bleach. The bleaching effect is accelerated by sunlight, so this trick works especially in bathrooms with plenty of natural light.

Don’t have lemons handy? Simply swap out the lemon juice for white vinegar.

The first time I realised cleaning walls on a regular basis was a thing was when I fell into a TikTok cleaning rabbit hole late at night. The algorithm served up video after video of influencers detailing the process of ‘how to clean walls’ until it felt like the walls of my own home were about to fall in on me out of pure shame. Never in my life had I cleaned a wall, nor did I intend to start. Surely cleaning walls was only something you did to prepare for a new paint job? Turns out I was wrong, but not alone.

I drove myself up the walls in an attempt to find out what all the fuss was about but was relieved to discover that there were plenty of wall washing dodgers like me out there. That said, there were also plenty of people washing their walls with alarming frequency, ranging anywhere from once a fortnight to once a year.

The reasons for the wall washing were numerous: reduced dust allergy symptoms, a home that always smells clean, to remove the build up of kitchen grease and to wipe away the sins of grubby pet paws and grotty toddler shenanigans. On top of this, washing walls is also good for the paint, with Dulux recommeding a thorough clean at least every two years to prolong the life of the product.

Even though I was convinced I’d rather watch paint dry than wash my walls, I decided to put my back and shoulders on the line and give it a go to a) see what all the fuss is about and b) hopefully prove that this is a job you can skip guilt-free. Concerned I’d make a mess of my walls and leave it coated in streaks and watermarks, I decided to consult cleaning expert, Barb de Corti, founder and CEO of Enjo for her tips on how to do the job correctly.

What is the best thing to wash walls with?

Barb says it’s best to keep things simple when washing walls to avoid creating streaks or watermarks. She swears by the power of microfibre and water alone and recommends the Enjo Living Multi Tool Fibre and Multi Tool Hardware with a telescopic pole to reach high ceilings.  For this story, I also used: a flat mop (the Mr Siga Professional Microfibre Mop, specifically), the Vileda Spin Mop and all-purpose microfibre cloths.

  • If you’ve tried to clean your walls in the past and ended up with streaky walls that looked worse than when you started, Barb says that following a simple formula can prevent that from happening again. “Use this system: dust, wipe, rinse then stain removal.”
  • “When cleaning walls, it’s important to work quickly and not to soak the area,” says Barb who says it’s important to dry the walls thoroughly after cleaning them.
Barb’s top tips for cleaning walls:

(Photography: Martina Gemmola | Styling: Aimee Tarulli)

Method 1: Water and microfibre

For quick cleans to remove dust and light grease, the best option is to keep things simple with water and microfibre. This method is also great for spot cleaning and for tackling smaller areas.

What you’ll need:

  • 3 microfibre cloths: one for dusting, one for cleaning and one for drying
  • Spray bottle filled with water (optional extra: white vinegar to deoderise and cut through grease naturally)
  • Bucket to rinse cleaning cloth frequently

What to do:

  1. To remove dust, start at the top of the wall and lightly skim the surface of the walls with a dry microfibre cloth.
  2. Dampen another microfibre cloth (or an Enjo Fabric Glove) and, working in small sections from top to bottom, wash the walls in a circular motion.
  3. Rinse the cloth regularly to prevent dust streaks.
  4. Dry the area with a soft cloth and wipe down the skirting boards as you go.

Full disclaimer: It took me three weeks to actually muster up the time and energy to wash my walls. This is part of the problem with the task – where to fit it into an already busy life and cleaning schedule? But, I began by dusting my walls with a dry microfibre cloth on a telescopic handle. This part was pretty easy.

Then, I used a spray bottle filled with water to lightly dampen a clean Enjo dusting glove. I was careful not to spray the water directly on the wall. I then proceeded to wipe the walls in a top-to-bottom, left-to-right motion. I could see the damp marks on the wall, and tried not to freak out about streaking until the process was completely finished.

Using another microfibre cloth, I went over the wall to remove as much moisture as possible. The result was a completely streak- and dust-free finish.

How I went using Method #1

Method 2: Cleanser, hot water and a mop

If you’re cleaning a large area or are tackling a wall with visible dirt and grime, you may need to reach for a slightly stronger cleaning solution.

What you’ll need:

What to do:

  1. Dust the wall using a dry mop head or flat mop cloth.
  2. Dilute the cleaning solution in water according to the instructions on the packaging. (If using dishwashing liquid or laundry detergent, a drop is more than enough).
  3. Using a clean mop head or mop cloth, dip the mop in the cleaning solution and wring out as much excess water as possible. Working from the top down and from left to right, wipe the walls lightly to clean. Avoid scrubbing in any one spot for too long.
  4. Dry the wall with a clean microfibre cloth.

I tried Method 2 twice. The first time with a flat microfibre mop and a drop of Undo This Mess Deep Clean Laundry Liquid diluted in steaming hot water and the second time with a Vileda Spin Mop and a drop of Wash Wild Dishwashing Liquid

Round one:

In my research on this topic, I found a lot of people who swear by washing their walls with a drop of fabric softener in hot water. I personally don’t love the smell of most fabric softeners, but I’m obsessed with the natural fragrance of Undo This Mess Deep Clean Laundry Liquid (it reminds of Barley Sugar lollies and freshly laundered, line-dried linen). So I thought, why not try that in place of fabric softener?

After dry dusting the wall, I diluted a drop of the laundry liquid in a bucket of boiling water, dipped a microfibre cloth in the solution and wrung it out as much as possible. I then placed the microfibre cloth onto a flat mop and washed the walls in a top-to-bottom, left-to-right motion. Initially I found it hard to manouever the flat mop, and found it kind of got stuck and flipped around before I got the hang of it. The advantage of this method was that I was able to tackle a large area of the wall in a pretty short amount of time. I followed up by drying the wall with a clean, dry cloth and it too left a streak free finish with the added bonus of fresh fragrance.

Round two:

Ah the spin mop. Love it for my floors but was honestly terrified of using it on my walls. I thought it would be hard to control in an upright position and leave far too much moisture behind, but I was actually so surprised when I gave it a go. After dry dusting the wall, I filled the spin mop bucket with hot water from the tap. I then added a drop of dishwashing liquid to the water and submerged the spin mop head in the solution. I spun the mop, spun it again, and spun it again (just for good measure). Then I began mopping the walls. It was difficult to go from left-to-right using this mop, so I went with more of an up-and-down motion, starting on the right side of the wall to the left. It was fast, easy to see marks and clean them as I went and it definitely didn’t leave much moisture behind at all. Again, I dried the wall with a microfibre cloth and didn’t notice any streaks or water marks. This was my favourite method by far and feel this would be the best choice if you’re prepping walls to paint, or need to deep clean a large room.

Why is it important to wash your walls?

Walls are a magnet for dust and debris, so regular cleaning is essential, says Barb. “They have a way of collecting dust and cobwebs in the corners,” she says, adding “Smoke in the house like tobacco, candles and incense as well as cooking fumes can accumulate over time and stain walls, making a clean necessary.”

How often should you wash your walls?

“It’s best to dust at least once or twice a month,” says Barb. That being said, if your walls are stained or you can see visible dirt, grease or … crayon … then you may need to wash them more frequently.

Some homes require more frequent wall washing than others. If, for example, you have an open fireplace, children, indoor pets and dark walls that show every speck of dust, you may find your walls need more frequent upkeep than a next door neighbour who has zero pets, a takeaway addiction and a reverse cycle air conditioner with a built-in HEPA filter.

Certain rooms also require more attention than others. “Kitchen walls have cooking and frying fumes which stick to the walls over time and make them look yellow,” says Barb. “Bathroom walls have hair spray, deodorants and other sprays which make them sticky and attract dust.”

When I moved into my home two years ago, the walls had been freshly painted. This was the first time I’d ever attempted to wash the walls and although I found the task much easier than I thought it would be, I don’t think it made that much of a difference to the look or cleanliness of my home. If you have a fireplace or pets, you may find it a chore worth doing regularly. But for me? I’m going to skip washing walls completely guilt free for at least another two years.

There’s nothing quite like the smell of fresh laundry. That is, unless you’ve begun to detect a musty scent permeating your clothes, and not just that questionable load of sweaty gym gear, but every single load. Why does my laundry smell even after washing? You ask yourself, questioning everything from the time it took you to hang the washing after the cycle finished to the big-name brand of washing powder you purchased on special last week. The likeliest culprit, however, is probably the washing machine itself.

It’s important to clean your washing machine regularly, because over time, dirt, minerals and detergent can build up. Pair that with moisture and a lack of ventilation and you’ve got the perfect breeding ground for mould and bacteria. We reached out to Colin Jones, category expert at Appliances Online, for his insider tips on cleaning a washing machine correctly and the simple tips you can follow to ensure your machine stays clean and fresh for years to come.

(Photography: Louise Roche | Styling: Kylie Jackes)

7 signs your washing machine needs to be cleaned

Colin says some of the signs your washing machine is due for a deep-clean include:

  1. Clothes smell musty even after they’ve been washed
  2. Visible mould or mildew growth in the door seal, detergent dispenser or drum
  3. Clothes coming out of the wash with detergent or fabric softener residue on them
  4. Clothing discolouration due to mould or mildew
  5. Water draining slowly after a cycle
  6. Cycles are taking longer and clothes aren’t being cleaned as effectively as they used to
  7. Unusual noises like banging, clunking or grinding during a wash

How to clean a washing machine: A step-by-step guide

1. Rinse the drum with hot water

The first line of defence when cleaning a washing machine is to run an empty, long, hot cycle. You may find this is enough to banish odours without having to reach for any strong cleaners at all. Many modern washing machines have a dedicated drum clean cycle that reaches temperatures of about 90℃. Some machines have sensors that will detect the level of residue in the machine and prompt a drum clean as required. If your machine doesn’t have this feature, it’s a good idea to run this cycle at least once a month.

2. Wash the detergent dispenser

Once the drum has been cleaned, it’s important to give the rest of the machine a clean, too, says Colin.

“Many people forget to clean the detergent and fabric softener dispensers,” he says. “Regularly remove and clean  the dispenser – you can do this by handwashing them or placing them in the dishwasher (if they are removable and dishwasher safe).”

3. Check the filter

Both front load washing machines and top loaders have lint filters that need to be cleaned regularly, says Colin. Failing to clean the filter “can affect the machine’s efficiency and potentially cause odours or drainage issues,” he says.

Many front load washing machines have the filter located at the front of the machine behind a little ‘door’. Place a towel on the floor in front of the washing machine, then open the access door, unscrew the filter and remove any debris or lint. Clean the filter with hot soapy water and dry it thoroughly before replacing it and closing the access door.

Top loaders, on the other hand, often have a filter located in the central agitator or in the drum itself, hidden behind a hatch. Simply remove from the machine, remove debris and clean with hot soapy water before placing it back in the machine.

If the location of the filter is not obvious, consult the user manual.

(Photography: Chris Warnes | Styling: Fiona Gould)

4. Wipe everything down

Next, it’s time to give the machine a complete once-over. Start by wiping down the door seals with a soft microfibre cloth. Moisture can accumulate in this hidden section of the machine, leading the a build-up of mould. Pay attention to the areas around the door window and

Then it’s time to dust the surface of the machine. Using a damp, soapy microfibre cloth, wipe down the outside of the machine. Buff dry with another microfibre cloth to prevent streaking.

5. Dry and dust

The best way to ensure smells stay away for good is to allow your machine to dry thoroughly between uses. To do this, simply keep the door and detergent compartment ajar after each use. Finish off the washing machine clean by vacuuming around, beneath and behind the machine.

How to get rid of mould in a front load washing machine

Front load washing machines have a reputation for harbouring mould, but with regular care this doesn’t have to be the case. If you can see that your machine has already succumbed to mould, here’s how to get it back into shape. When cleaning a mouldy washing machine, be sure to ensure the room is well-ventilated and that you’re wearing gloves and protective clothing.

Removing mould from front load washing machine gasket

To remove mould from a washing machine gasket, LG recommend wiping it with a solution of oxygen bleach (such as Napisan or Sard Wonder) and water. Repeat weekly.

How to clean a washing machine with vinegar

Is it safe to use vinegar to clean a washing machine? The short answer: yes. Vinegar is an effective, natural mould killer that can banish product build-up and musty odours. While many swear by a hot water and vinegar cycle to keep their machine in tip-top condition, some manufacturers warn against the practice, as vinegar may cause damage to the machine over time. Simply add two cups of white vinegar to the washing machine’s detergent dispenser and run a drum clean cycle. If in doubt, refer to the user manual.

How to clean a washing machine with vinegar and bi-carb soda

Colin says to clean a washing machine with vinegar, “Add two cups of white vinegar to your machine’s detergent compartment. Mix a quarter cup of baking soda with water and add it to the drum and gasket.” Immediately run an empty long, hot cycle to rinse out the vinegar and the bi-carb soda.

How to clean washing machine with bleach

If you can smell mould, but can’t see it, try giving the drum a thorough clean to banish mould lurking in unseen places. Samsung recommend starting by running a spin-only cycle (to remove excess moisture). Add chlorine bleach to the detergent dispenser and immediately run a hot, long cycle or a drum clean cycle. Once the cycle has completed, run a rinse cycle to ensure all bleach residue is removed. Dry the machine with a soft, microfibre cloth and leave the machine’s door and detergent dispenser ajar to air dry completely.

Let’s talk about scrud

“Scrud is the name given to the build up of detergent or fabric softener,” says Colin. “It can give your clothes a waxy texture or leave brown, greasy marks on your clothes. It can affect the efficiency and performance of the washing machine if it is not regularly cleaned and removed.

“To prevent or remove scrud, it’s recommended to clean the washing machine’s detergent and fabric softener compartments, run empty hot water cycles with vinegar or specialised washing machine cleaners, and periodically wipe down the interior surfaces of the machine.”

To remove scrud from a top load washing machine, LG recommend dissolving 2-3 dishwashing tablets in a bucket of hot water. Pour the solution directly into the washing machine drum and run the machine’s hottest and longest cycle.

  • Reduce the amount of laundry detergent you’re using. Follow the recommended dose or even halve it – you may be surprised at how clean your clothes come out using less, rather than more, detergent.
  • Skip the fabric softener. Fabric softener may make your clothes soft, perfumed and snuggly, but it’s also leaving behind the exact same residue in your machine (known as ‘scrud’). Over time, this can lead to bacteria and mould built up. If you’re not ready to ditch softener, use it sparingly instead or replace it with a dash of vinegar.
  • Keep the washing machine’s door and soap dispenser ajar between washes. This will allow the machine to dry out, reducing the chances of mould and mildew developing.
  • Run the occasional hot cycle. If you swear by cold water washes, you may find that musty smells build up in your machine frequently. Consider running the odd warm or hot cycle (for towels or bedding) to keep things fresh.

How to clean and sanitise wooden chopping boards https://www.homebeautiful.com.au/cleaning/how-to-clean-chopping-boards/ Wed, 14 Feb 2024 06:01:00 +0000 https://www.homebeautiful.com.au/how-to-clean-chopping-boards Banish bacteria chop-chop!

The post How to clean and sanitise wooden chopping boards appeared first on Home Beautiful.

Despite their ubiquity in most modern households, you’ll rarely see a professional chef using a plastic cutting board. If you know how to clean a wooden chopping board properly and take good care of it, you’ll never look back. That’s because wooden chopping boards naturally resist bacteria, are much gentler on sharp knives and won’t release microplastics into your food. They also look incredible positioned out and proud on your kitchen bench.

Wooden chopping boards, for all their good qualities, do however, require special care. Some modern iterations can simply be placed in the dishwasher, while others require gentler handling and regular oiling to avoid warping and splitting. Wood can also absorb the taste of aromatic foods (think onion and garlic), so knowing how to clean, dry, deoderise and sanitise wooden cutting boards correctly is essential. Here are 6 ways to clean wooden chopping boards with ease.

  • Unless your wooden chopping board is dishwasher safe, avoid placing it in the dishwasher, as it can cause the board to crack or warp.
  • When drying cutting boards, place them in a position where air can circulate. This allows the board to dry out completely, eliminating any further bacteria that can live in moisture.
  • Wooden chopping boards with deep scars or visible mould spots should be discarded.
  • While some sources claim that vinegar or lemons can disinfect a chopping board, this information is incorrect. Vinegar and lemon are not effective sanitisers.
Quick wooden chopping board care tips

How to clean a wooden chopping board

To clean a wooden chopping board, scrape away any food remnants before washing the wooden cutting board in warm water with mild dishwashing liquid and a firm dishwashing brush. Wipe away excess moisture with a soft tea towel and allow to air dry completely. If you feel your chopping board needs a little extra TLC, follow up a wash with one of the following cleaning methods.

1. Bicarbonate of soda

Mix one tablespoon of bi-carb soda, one tablespoon of salt and one tablespoon of water to form a paste. Give your chopping board a good scrub with the paste, then rinse thoroughly with hot water and dry. For a more effective cleaner, add a little white vinegar and lemon juice.

2. Vinegar

Vinegar is great for deoderising wooden chopping boards. After washing your board, give it a wipe with full-strength, white vinegar. You can boost the deodorising power by sprinkling the vinegar-coated board with bicarbonate of soda followed by a spray of white vinegar. Leave for ten minutes, whilst it foams up, then rinse off and wipe dry.

3. Lemons

Whilst they don’t disinfect, lemons are great for de-odourising your board, which is handy for boards that are used for chopping up onions and garlic. Cut a lemon in half and rub it all over the board. You can also add salt to help absorb odours.

How to sanitise a wooden chopping board

So there’s clean, and then there’s clean and sanitised. Sanitising (or disinfecting) a chopping board refers to the process of eliminating bacteria from an already clean surface. This may be necessary after using the board to chop raw meat or after prolongued use. Here are three ways to sanitise a wooden chopping board.

1. Chlorine bleach

There is only one chopping board sanitation method the NSW Food Authority endorses, and that is washing the board in a solution of chlorine bleach and water. Dilute the bleach in water according to the product label and immerse the clean chopping board in the solution for the recommended time to kill off any bacteria. Rinse thoroughly and allow to air dry completely.

2. Hydrogen peroxide

You can use food grade 3 per cent hydrogen peroxide to disinfect chopping boards that have been used for chopping up raw meat. Spray enough hydrogen peroxide around the chopping board for it get into the cuts and rub it in with a clean cloth. Rinse thoroughly with water, then dry.

3. Microwave

This tip will only work for wooden chopping boards that are small enough to fit in the microwave. A 1996 study found that microwaving a wooden chopping board for 3-4 minutes on high achieved “almost total elimination of vegetative cells”. The results varied depending on the board size, the amount of bacteria present and the amount of moisture contained in the board.

Now that your wooden chopping board is clean, maintain it by applying a food safe oil to the surface regularly. Oil prevents the board from absorbing moisture and harbouring mould and bacteria.

Masterclass recommends coating the board in linseed oil or beeswax and rub in the oil using a soft cloth or paper towel. Wipe away excess oil. Repeat once more before allowing the board to dry out overnight.

3 ways to keep skirting boards dust free for good https://www.homebeautiful.com.au/cleaning/how-to-keep-skirting-boards-dust-free/ Mon, 12 Feb 2024 06:23:34 +0000 https://www.homebeautiful.com.au/how-to-keep-skirting-boards-dust-free Keeping skirting boards clean doesn't have to be a back-breaking task.

The post 3 ways to keep skirting boards dust free for good appeared first on Home Beautiful.

There are a few maintenance jobs around the house that most of us just put off for as long as possible, at least until it gets to the point where we just can’t stand it anymore and we’re forced to buckle down and do it, at least for our own sanity.

Cleaning the fridge comes to mind, as well as getting in and clearing the dust bunnies from under the couch. The other absolute pain of a job is cleaning the skirting boards. Yep, those boards that line the space between the floor and the walls get amazingly dirty, especially for something that really never gets touched.

All sorts of grime, splashes, and dust end up on these, and if you’ve got a bit of damp, they get even filthier. Rather than having to really throw your back into this job once a year or so, there are three super simple tricks that will help you get them clean and keep them clean.

1. Use a vacuum brush attachment

If the skirting boards are covered in a light layer of recently acquired dust, the brush attachment on your vacuum cleaner may do the trick.

Protect your back by clicking the attachment onto the vacuum’s telescopic handle and swiping gently across the skirting boards, taking care not to bump or scratch the wall as you go.

2. Dust while you mop

If the dust has already firmly settled on skirting boards and is held in place by a layer of moisture and grease, vacuuming alone may not get the job done. That’s where a mop comes in handy.

Use a mop dipped in a cleaning solution of hot water, dishwashing liquid and white vinegar to gently lift stubborn dust from skirting boards.

Kill two birds with one stone and mop the skirting boards every time you mop your floors. This will ensure your skirting boards are permanently dust free!

3. The dryer sheet hack

Dryer sheets are designed to soften, reduce static and impart fragrance to clothing, but there’s another way to use this nifty item to increase the amount of time your skirting boards stay dust free.

Note: this hack will require you to get down on hands and knees, but simply swipe a dryer sheet over clean skirting boards once a year to prevent dust build up. The dryer sheet will leave an imperceptible wax coating on the boards which will prevent dust sticking and settling on the boards.

How to clean a TV screen without leaving scratches or streaks https://www.homebeautiful.com.au/cleaning/how-to-clean-tv-screen/ Thu, 08 Feb 2024 04:20:37 +0000 https://www.homebeautiful.com.au/?p=1059277 Make your TV screen gleam.

The post How to clean a TV screen without leaving scratches or streaks appeared first on Home Beautiful.

A big, giant television may not be an ideal focal point for a living room – or so goes the interior design lore – but in most homes, the reality is that the TV really is just positioned as most important element, hung on a wall where everyone can see it. Which is why it’s so important that the TV screen is clean. TV sizes are growing, and retailers say the most popular sizes range from about 65 to 75 inches. That’s a large canvas for greasy, sticky fingerprints (if you have kids you’ll understand), smudges and lingering dust particles! An unclean screen doesn’t make for the best viewing experience, either.

So, how do you clean a TV screen? Which cleaning products are safe to use on a television, and how do you clean it without leaving unsightly streaks? What about all the dust that gets caught in the back of the TV? We spoke to Colin Jones, Category Expert at Appliances Online for the lowdown on all things TV screen cleaning.

What is the best way to clean a TV screen?

The best way to clean a TV screen is: gently. But before you so much as even whip out a microfibre cloth, be sure to unplug the unit first. This will prevent any electrical mishaps. Colin says it’s also important not to clean the TV immediately after it has been turned off. “Allow it to cool down, as cleaning a hot screen can cause the cleaning solution to evaporate quickly and leave streaks.”

While you wait for the TV to cool down, gather your supplies.

03

Miele Boost CX1 Graphite Grey bagless vacuum cleaner

From $466, Appliances Online

Dust tends to settle in the grill at the back of the TV. A vacuum with a soft dusting brush attachment can help you reach into the crevices to dislodge it. The Miele Boost is a powerful vacuum with a hygiene filter to trap fine dust and allergens.

04

WD-40 specialist air duster 350g

From $20.99, Automotive Superstore

Dust tends to settle in the grill at the back of the TV. A vacuum with a soft dusting brush attachment can help you reach into the crevices to dislodge it. The Miele Boost is a powerful vacuum with a hygiene filter to trap fine dust and allergens.

How to clean a TV screen

  1. Colin recommends starting with a can of compressed air to lift and remove dust caught between the screen and its frame. “Hold the can upright and avoid spraying too close to the screen to prevent any liquid from coming out,” he says.
  2. Dampen the microfibre cloth with the cleaning solution or distilled water (you can use plain tap water but it may leave behind some mineral deposits) and wipe the screen in gentle circular motions from top to bottom. “Do not spray the cleaning solution directly on the unit, instead spray it on the microfibre cloth,” says Colin. Spraying cleaning solution directly on a screen could damage the screen or strip away the screen’s protective coating.
  3. Using a second, dry microfibre cloth, wipe the screen again to remove any remaining moisture or streaks.

Colin’s shares his top tips for removing fingerprints and smudges from a screen without leaving behind scratches or streaks:

  • “Microfibre cloths are gentle and effective at removing fingerprints and smudges without scratching the screen.”
  • For stubborn smudges: “Mix a 50/50 solution of distilled water and isopropyl alcohol (70% or higher). Dampen a corner of a microfibre cloth with the solution, then gently wipe the screen. Avoid applying excessive pressure.”
  • Always follow the manufacturer’s instructions when cleaning your TV.
3 tips to clean fingerprints and smudges from a TV screen

How to clean the back of a TV

Now that your television screen is clean, what about the back of the unit? We all know that’s where the dust really accumulates.

What you’ll need:

  • Can of compressed air
  • Microfibre cloth
  • Vacuum cleaner with soft brush attachment

Method:

  1. Unplug the television.
  2. Stand about 30cm back from the rear of the screen. Use the compressed can of air to gently blow dust out of hard-to-reach crevices.
  3. Use a microfibre cloth to wipe away dust. If dust remains, use a vacuum cleaner with a soft brush attachment.
  • Using harsh cleaning products: ammonia based cleaners, alcohol or acetone should not be used to clean TV screens as they can damage the protective coating or even cause discolouration.
  • Using too much cleaning solution: Use liquids sparingly, as you don’t want excess liquid to seep into the TV’s internal components. Too much cleaning product can also result in streaks and a cloudy residue.
  • Using the incorrect cloth: Some cloths are softer than others. Avoid paper towels, tissues and rough cloths to wipe a screen as they can damage the delicate surface.

The best way to clean different types of TV screen surfaces

LED and LCD screens

The safest way to clean an LED or LCD screen is with a lint-free microfibre cloth. “This type of cloth is gentle on the screen and won’t scratch it,” says Colin. Liquid solutions must be used sparingly, as there is the potential for the cleaning solution to seep into the edges and damage the TV’s internal components. “If needed, dampen the microfibre cloth slightly with water but do not saturate it.”

OLED screens

You can follow the same instructions to clean an OLED screen, says Colin. But there is one major difference: “OLED screens are more fragile than LED/LCD screens,” says Colin, “so it’s important to be extra cautious.” Avoid using liquid cleaners where possible and take care not to apply too much pressure to the screen as you wipe it.

Plasma screens

Plasma screens are coated in glass, so it’s safe to use a microfibre cloth and a small amount of glass cleaner, if necessary. These screens do generate heat, so take time to allow the TV to cool before applying any cleaning solutions.

Matte screens

A new generation of televisions like Samsung’s The Screen have a unique matte finish that gives the screen a canvas-like appearance when not in use. This type of screen requires special care, says Colin. “Use a specialised screen-cleaning solution designed for electronics. Gently wipe the screen in a vertical or horizontal motion, using light pressure. Avoid applying too much force, as this can damage the matte finish.”
